Did you know there are nearly 285 million people who are blind, we are blessed to have eyes that can see. Today there are nearly 2.2 billion as per WHO who suffer from some form of Distance Vision/ Near Vision related impairment
Are you Taking Care Of Your Eyes ?
Our eyes are our window to the world and its imperative that we take care of them - give adequate rest to them, eat nutritious food that give the necessary vitamins and minerals for the eyes.
As I write this blog during Covid-19, it becomes even more essential we treat our eyes with care - our screen-times have increased considerably.
Children are suddenly facing a problem where they need to sit before a screen for hours. Sales people are forced to complete sales pitches online. Zoom fatigue is becoming common. Mobile phone addiction and binge watching are further adding fuel to the fire.
Here are 3 simple tips to protect your eyes from excessive screen viewing and dryness from the comfort of your homes.
1. Blinking !
Yes, you read it right. The simple act of blinking can reduce eye strain. Many of us have reduced blinking as we sit infront of the screen. Blinking ensures our eyes remain moist and that split second our eyes get a little rest from the screens.
To reinforce blinking as a habit, for every 20 mins that you spend watching or reading, see in a different direction a distant object and blink for 20 seconds consciously. This is also called 20-20-20 rule
Blinking the eyes helps in 2 ways :
a. Helps your eyes to focus on a different object so that eye muscles are not strained
b. Blinking moistens the eyes
2. Wash your eyes regularly
For every one hour you watch anything, be it on TV, mobile phones or attend meetings, your eyes get dry. Even if you read a book for more than 1 hour without a break, your eyes get strained.
Eye dryness and strain associated with this can be easily reduced by splashing your eyes with nice palmfuls of water(cold/room temperature).
Repeat this for at-least 10 times. You might even witness your dryness reducing instantly as you practise this .
3. Palming Eye Exercise
Palming is a wonderful technique to relax your eyes. You will feel relaxed by performing for just 2 mins!!
Steps to do palming
1. Sit erect, close your eyes and remove your specs(if you wear).
2. Rub your palms till you feel warm.
3. Cup your palms and place them on your eyes completely wrapping them in the cups without touching the eyes.
4. Be seated in this posture for 2 mins.
5. If you feel palms are no longer warm, rub them again and repeat step 3 and 4, till you feel relaxed.
